51st Convocation of National Sugar Institute: Nigerian student bags gold medal

51st Convocation of National Sugar Institute, Kanpur was held today where Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti, Minister of State, Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution & Rural Development, and Shri Ashwini Srivastava, Joint Secretary (Sugar), Government of India were present as Chief Guest and Distinguished Guest respectively. The convocation proceedings were started after paying floral tributes to Swami Vivekanand on his 161st birth anniversary, lighting of lamp and Saraswati Vandana.

Shri Ashok Garg, Education In-charge in his address while congratulating the pass out students of 2020-21, 2021-22 and 2022-23 informed that during the convocation 745 Fellowship, Post Graduate Diploma and Certificates are being conferred. Out of it, six students have been from overseas country with one of the Nigerian student, Mr. Samson Akore Adeoye getting the prestigious Mahatma Gandhi Gold Medal for the year 2022-23 for securing first position in Sugar Technology Course. Girls are also now looking for their careers in the sugar industry and it is heartening that Ms. Nidhi Rajput of Sugar Technology and Ms. Shivani Gautam & Ms. Sonam Prajapati of Quality Control Course are being conferred “Shrijee Future Leader Award” and “Global Cane Sugar Service Award” for their commendable efforts.

In his welcome address, Shri Narendra Mohan, Director, National Sugar Institute, Kanpur while thanking the Government of India for all around support for developing many academic and research facilities at the institute which helped in attracting students from many sugar producing countries, called upon the pass out students to be entrepreneurs so as to become job creators rather than job seekers. Today, institute has become the first choice for the overseas students who wish to take up their careers with sugar industry. During the last few years, we have imparted teaching and training to about 100 personnel from Sri Lanka, Kenya, Bhutan, Indonesia, Uganda, Pakistan, Nigeria and Yemen etc.

The sugar industry, now, offers plethora of possibilities for developing innovative products and for which start ups can be set up and for which institute can also provide technical assistance. It is creditable that the sugar producing countries like Cuba and Indonesia which used to lead the global sugar scenario earlier in respect of production and technology are now looking at the institute for support, he said.

Shri Ashwini Srivastava, Joint Secretary (Sugar), Government of India lauded the services provided by National Sugar Institute, Kanpur in providing competent technologists and engineers who have excelled in Indian and overseas sugar industry and also for efforts made by the institute for enhancing efficiency and viability of the sugar industry. Ministry shall provide all required assistance to the institute to further enhance the facilities so as to make them world class, he said.

Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti, Minister of State, Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution & Rural Development, Government of India giving her blessings to the recipients of various awards, Fellowships, Post Graduate Diplomas and Certificates advised them to continue their zeal to learn more. You have completed your studies at the institute but learning never ends and with the fast changing technological scenario, you have to keep yourself abreast with them for survival and growth. You have to play a dominant role in developing a self sustainable sugar industry and country, she said addressing the students. She also praised the efforts of the institute for starting many new courses and carrying out significant change in infrastructural facilities and services due to which today it has become a sugar institute of global recognition.

During the convocation besides, Mahatma Gandhi Gold Medal, prestigious awards viz. Shrijee Future Leader Award, ISGEC Excellence Award, C V Subbarao Excellence Award and Praj Excellence Award were given to the meritorious students of various courses. In addition to it various cash awards constituted by Indian Sugar Mills Association, National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories and Global Cane Sugar Services Pvt. Ltd. were given and in all 17 medals and 40 cash awards were conferred to the meritorious students of various courses.

During the convocation, M/s Balrampur Chini Mills Ltd. and M/s Dalmia Bharat Sugar Industries Ltd. announced giving “Padmashri Meenakshi Saroagi Gold Medal & Cash Award” and “DCM Bharat Gold Medal & Cash Award” respectively to the meritorious students of sugar technology and engineering courses. An alumnus, Dr. G D Nigam, also announced giving Gold and Silver Medals to the students securing highest marks in Physical Chemistry subject.

Shri Virendra Kumar, Controller of Examination expressed gratitude towards Hon’ble Minister & Joint Secretary (Sugar) for their gracious presence and thanked all others who attended the convocation for making it successful.
