The Uttar Pradesh government has announced a increase in the sugarcane State Advised Price (SAP) ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. In a boost for sugarcane farmers, the government has raised the SAP for the crushing season 2023-24 to ₹20 per quintal.
The SAP for early maturing varieties of sugarcane has been increased from Rs 350 per quintal to Rs 370, for common varieties from Rs 340 per quintal to Rs 360, and for unsuitable varieties, the sugarcane price has been increased from Rs 335 per quintal to Rs 355.
The decision was approved by the state cabinet, providing relief to farmers who have been eagerly awaiting a positive development in sugarcane pricing.
Earlier, several sugar mill owners in UP have raised concerns about a significant diversion of sugarcane to jaggery manufacturing units this year due to delay in announcement of sugarcane SAP.
