Solapur: The sugarcane crushing season is underway in Maharashtra, with Solapur region leading the state in sugar mills’ operations in the 2023-24 season, according to figures from the Sugar Commissionerate. In Solapur, 47 sugar mills have commenced crushing operations. As of January 18, 2024, a total of 123.24 lakh tons of sugarcane has been crushed, resulting in the production of 105.86 lakh quintals (10.58 lakh tons) of sugar.
Across Maharashtra, a total of 198 sugar mills have initiated crushing operations by January 18, 2024. This includes 97 cooperative mills and 101 private mills, contributing to a total crushed sugarcane quantity of 567.92 lakh tons. The state has produced around 530.3 lakh quintals (around 53 lakh tons) of sugar so far. The current average sugar recovery in the state is 9.34 percent.
In terms of sugar recovery rates, Kolhapur district leads with 10.72 percent, followed by Solapur with a sugar recovery rate of 9.57 percent.
