Scientists advise farmers on increasing sugarcane productivity and protect from diseases

Khekra, Baghpat: Scientists at a one-day workshop held at the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), advised farmers on ways to increase sugarcane productivity, reported Amar Ujala.

The workshop was inaugurated by the chief guest, District Cane Officer Anil Kumar Bharti.

Agricultural scientist Dr. Vikas Malik said that farmers should use the trench method to irrigate their fields and apply balanced fertilizers to their sugarcane crops. He warned that excessive use of fertilizers would not only harm the crop but also hurt human health.

Malik also advised farmers to monitor their crops to protect them from red rot, a major disease, and the top borer, a major insect pest. He said that the threat of red rot is increasing in both eastern and western Uttar Pradesh. If the disease strikes, it will affect future sugarcane productivity and recovery. To prevent this, farmers should change the variety of the crop and use four kilograms of Trichoderma per acre at the time of sowing.

The top borer insect pest is also seen to be highly prevalent in most areas of western Uttar Pradesh. To protect the crop from this pest, farmers can use Trichocards in their fields.

The workshop was also attended by KVK in-charge Dr. Laxmikant, farmers Yogendra Dabas, Ram Sevak, Jagbir Singh, Mukesh Malik, SK Tyagi, Dr. Kuldeep Pilania, Naresh Kumar, Anmol Rathi, and Dharampal Singh.
