The Kolhapur region has emerged as the frontrunner in sugar production and recovery in Maharashtra, with a sugar recovery rate of nearly 11.50 per cent.
According to data from the Sugar Commissionerate, as of March 4, 2024, the Kolhapur region has produced 247.73 lakh quintals (24.77 lakh tonnes) of sugar. The output is the result of crushing 216.87 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, yielding a sugar recovery rate of 11.42 per cent.
40 sugar mills participated in the crushing season in the Kolhapur division, including 26 cooperative and 14 private mills. Notably, 2 sugar mills in the division have already completed their crushing operations.
Of the 207 sugar mills that participated in the crushing this season, including 103 cooperative and 104 private mills, 932.57 lakh tonnes of sugarcane have been crushed so far, and 939.14 lakh quintals (93.91 lakh tonnes) of sugar produced.
In comparison, 211 mills had crushed 987.93 lakh tonnes of sugarcane and produced 980.67 lakh quintals of sugar in the previous season during the same period.
So far, two sugar mills in Kolhapur division, seven sugar mills in Solapur division, three in Pune division, one in Ahmednagar division, six sugar mills in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar division, and one sugar mill in Nanded division have closed their crushing season.
