Baghpat: Workers meet with accident while cleaning tank at sugar mill; one die

Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh: A contract worker died and another was injured due to toxic gas inhalation while cleaning a molasses tank at the Malkapur sugar mill on Tuesday, reported Amar Ujala.

The worker, identified as Anuj, succumbed to the gas, while the other, Rahul, was rushed to a private hospital in Meerut in critical condition

Anuj and Rahul, both brothers from the village of Barwala, had been working on contract at the sugar mill for the past four to five years.

While cleaning the tank, the two workers inhaled toxic gas and fell unconscious. They were rushed to a private hospital by fellow workers, where Anuj was declared dead by doctors. Rahul’s condition remains critical.

Upon receiving the news, the deceased’s family and a large number of villagers also reached the hospital and informed the police.

As per media report, the villagers demanded action against the mill administration and the contractor, accusing them of negligence and unsafe working conditions. The protesters included Sunil, Sanjay, Jaiveer, Sushil, Dharmendra, Azad, and Sohanveer.

The police inspector informed that a team had been sent to the spot. He added that no complaint has been received yet, and action will be taken once a complaint is filed.
