Sao Paulo: As per the data from industry group UNICA released on Wednesday, sugar production in Brazil’s centre-south region surged by 84.25% in the second half of April compared to the same period last year, surpassing market forecasts.
UNICA reported that mills in the region produced 1.84 million metric tonnes of sugar during the last two weeks of April.
Luciano Rodrigues, UNICA’s director of sector intelligence, stated in a release that most of the production increase was due to a faster pace of sugarcane crushing in the initial month of the 2024/25 crop.
Crushing activity totalled 34.57 million tons during the period, marking a 61.30% increase from the previous year.
Rodrigues commented, “This trend is likely to change in the coming months, as we anticipate lower yields.”
During the second half of April, centre-south mills allocated 48.4% of their sugarcane for sugar production, compared to 43.5% during the same period last year.
UNICA also noted that ethanol production in the region surged by 51.86% to reach 1.51 billion litres.
