Ethanol boost: E20 petrol is available at 13,569 PSU outlets

India has significantly expanded its energy infrastructure, now boasting a total of 81,529 PSU retail outlets nationwide. Notably, among these outlets, 13,569 now offer Ethanol Blended Petrol (E20), in line with the target of achieving 20 percent ethanol blending by 2025, as per the latest Ready Reckoner report from the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell (PPAC).

According to the report, India is also on track to achieve 20% blending by 2025 and E20 petrol is already available at 13,569 PSU outlets out of 81,529 total PSU Retail Outlets as on 30-04-2024. Successful Pilot Study on E27 Fuel and Ethanol Blended Diesel Fuel have also taken place in country.

The Government of India has been implementing Ethanol Blended with Petrol (EBP) Programme throughout the country wherein Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) sell petrol blended with ethanol. Under EBP Programme, Government has fixed the target of 20% blending of ethanol with petrol by 2025.

In order to achieve the target of 20% blending by 2025, about 1016 crore litres of ethanol is required and total requirement of ethanol including for other uses is 1350 crore litres. For this, about 1700 crore liters of ethanol producing capacity is required to be in place by 2025 considering plant operates at 80% efficiency. The Government has estimated the demand of ethanol required for 20% blending by 2025 keeping in view the growth of petrol-based vehicles in two-wheeler and passenger vehicle segments& the projected sale of Motor Spirit (MS).

Further, with a view to enhance the ethanol production capacity in the country to achieve the blending targets set under EBP Programme, the Government has notified various ethanol interest subvention schemes.

The year 2023-24 has been momentous in view of many events which have been significant for energy transition. India’s G20 presidency saw the pinnacle of the movement where the forum discussed wide range of subjects including energy. As a significant outcome of the summit, the Global Biofuel Alliance was launched. It brings together 24 countries and 12 international organizations – including the World Economic Forum, the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank – to expand the use of sustainable biofuels.

  1. Because of this Ethanol Mixed with Fuels Engines are over heating upto 40% and inturn Weather is getting heated up unbearable situation for common people. Ethanol is meant for colder climates countries not for India.

  2. Wherever ethnol is added to the Petrol/Gasoline in the world, the price of ethanol blended petrol is lesser than pure petrol. There is no difference in price in India. Govt is getting ethanol from agricultural waste and we are paying ₹100 for this. The govt PSUs are maximizing the profit and benefit not transferred to comman man. Moreover, my car gives lesser milage & less pickup with e20. With no price insentive, e20 is more expensive that usual petrol.
