Karnataka: Farmers demand hike in cane price

Mysuru: The Mysuru district unit of the Karnataka Sugarcane Growers’ Association has called on the government to set a price of ₹4,000 per ton for sugarcane supplied to sugar mills.

A delegation of farmers from the association met Deputy Commissioner K.V. Rajendra in Mysuru on Tuesday and presented a memorandum detailing their demands, which include establishing a “fair” price for sugarcane.

The farmers argued that the cost of sugarcane production had risen due to the ongoing drought in the region, which also reduced the sugarcane yield.

The delegation, led by the Working President of the Mysuru district unit of the State Sugarcane Farmers Association, Kiraguru Shankar, also requested the authorities to lift the ban on transporting sugarcane grown in Mysuru to sugar factories in other districts.

The general secretary of the Mysuru district unit of the State Sugarcane Farmers Association, Baradanapura Nagaraj, highlighted in the memorandum that farmers were in a financial crisis due to the drought and unable to continue agricultural activities. He urged the Deputy Commissioner to facilitate interest-free loans from all banks, including Co-operative Banks.
