Fiji: Labasa sugar mill gears up for smooth crushing season

Chief Executive Bhan Pratap Singh said in a statement that all necessary tests and compliance approvals were in place for equipment and boilers on vessels.

The mill is well prepared for any eventuality throughout the season. It has a manpower pool of up to 500, as well as contingency for a possible energy supply disruption and mechanical faults.

“We have our backup diesel generators, which ensure continued operation in case there is any blackout from the EFL,” Singh said. “There is also a dedicated maintenance team rocked or SS can have it on standby to quickly rectify any, in the unlikely event of a mechanical failure, which would then minimize disruption to the crushing process.”

He urged cane farmers not to burn cane before delivery but rather to prioritize supplying the mills with fresh, green cane. He also gave the assurance that the transportation of their canes by rail carriages would be readily available as and when needed.

But with such promises, the Labasa Sugar Mill should be a lot better off towards a crushing season.
