Police in Bangladesh arrested a local leader of the Bangladesh Chhatra League, the student wing of the ruling party, on charges of looting sugar.
The former general secretary of the ruling party’s student wing, or BCL’s Beanibazar Upazila unit, Jahidul Haque Tahmid, along with others, hijacked a truck carrying some 1.5 tons of sugar and kept the driver hostage.
The BCL dissolved its Beanibazar Upazila and municipality unit committees after the allegations.
The arrest was made in Nidonpur village on Sunday morning, confirmed Debdulal Dhar, the in-charge of Beanibazar Police Station. Police will seek remand of Tahmid for further interrogation.
The looting allegedly took place on June 8 in the Charkhai area. Badrul Islam, the owner of the sugar, filed a case with police naming Tahmid and 10 others as suspects, besides some unidentified men.
The police are now hunting down the rest of the suspects linked to the alleged crime.
