Uttar Pradesh: Ex-MLA convicted in sugar mill vandalism case

Rampur: A special MP/MLA court in Uttar Pradesh delivered its judgement on Wednesday, convicting six persons, including former MLA Kashiram Diwakar, for breaking and vandalising a sugar mill in Shahabad. The court is expected to pronounce the quantum of punishment on Thursday.

District government advocate Seema Rana said that the case came into existence after a complaint in 2012 from Omveer Singh, the president of Rana Sugar Mill in Shahabad, regarding how Diwakar and others had forcibly entered the mill premises, which led to vandalism and the assault of some workers during the process of removing a tractor trolley from the site.

Initially, the charges were framed against 38 named persons, including Diwakar, and 200 unnamed persons. After the hearings, the special MP/MLA court Judge Vijay Kumar convicted Diwakar and five others— Krishnapal, Bharat, Sanju Yadav, Meghraj, and Suresh Gupta.

Rana further elaborated that the court had acquitted the rest of the accused persons owing to a lack of sufficient evidence against them.
