Karnataka: Farmers demand sugar recovery rate for sugarcane payments to be pegged at 8.5 per cent

Mysuru: Karnataka Sugarcane Farmers’ Association led by H. Bhagyaraj met with MP Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar on Tuesday to seek his backing for a better price for sugarcane, reported The Hindu.

The farmers requested the MP to urge the government to increase sugarcane FRP to ₹4,000 per tonne. Additionally, they demanded that the sugar recovery rate be set at 8.5%. They also advocated for the MSP to cover all crops, not just the notified ones, to benefit more cultivators. For the installation of solar-powered irrigation pump sets, they requested that the subsidy be directly credited to the farmers’ accounts.

One of the primary demands of farmers nationwide is the implementation of the Swaminathan Committee report on agricultural pricing, and the association called for its full implementation.

In anticipation of the Union Budget, the farmers asked for a loan waiver and requested the MP to bring this issue to the attention of Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.
