Kumar Bakrin elected as Chairman of ISO‘s Administrative Committee

Kamar Bakrin, the Executive Secretary and CEO of the National Sugar Development Council (NSDC), has been elected Chairman of the International Sugar Organisation’s (ISO) Administrative Committee.

This election occurred during the 64th ISO Council Meeting held in New Delhi, India.

Bakrin announced this in a press statement released on Wednesday.

During his recent trip to India, Bakrin chaired several important meetings leading up to the main 64th ISO Council session.

“This appointment is a significant recognition for Nigeria. It offers an opportunity to further influence ISO’s policies, decisions, and initiatives, enhance collaboration with leading sugar producers, and better advocate for Nigeria’s interests,” the statement said.

This marks the second consecutive year Bakrin has been appointed to a strategic leadership role at ISO. He was elected Vice Chairman of the Administrative Committee at the last meeting in London in 2023.

The Administrative Committee oversees ISO’s operations and updates its policy and procedural information.

At the recent meeting in India, Bakrin, leading the Nigerian delegation, played a key role in the discussions and brainstorming sessions over the three-day event.

The ISO is an intergovernmental body focused on improving global sugar market conditions, addressing challenges, and fostering cooperation for industry stability and sustainability.

Its 87 member states represent 92% of exports, 87% of production, 64% of consumption, and 34% of imports in the sugar industry.

The 64th ISO Council meeting, held at the Bharat Mandapam Conference Centre in New Delhi, included delegates from over 30 countries, as well as representatives from various international organizations, diplomats, and Indian government officials.

The meeting focused on promoting the development and adoption of sugar as a sustainable biofuel to help reduce global greenhouse gas emissions.
