New Delhi: The Global Biofuels Alliance (GBA), launched by India during its G20 presidency, is slated to get diplomatic status. The Indian government is expected to sign a headquarters agreement with the agency soon, reported Live Mint quoting two people aware of the matter..
The Agreement will, therefore, authorize the government to provide the alliance and its secretariat with exemptions, immunities, and privileges under Section 3 of the United Nations (Privileges & Immunities) Act, 1947. This will also vest GBA with its international legal person of an independent capacity for boosting its capacity for proper functioning globally.
The diplomatic status and recognition of GBA will be akin to that of the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) and the International Solar Alliance (ISA).
“Headquarters agreement is signed with the host country. It will give the immunities and privileges to the organization as an international organization; that process is also ongoing. We plan to do it very soon. The ministry of external affairs would sign the agreement,” one of the sources was quoted as saying by Live Mint.
The implementation of this agreement requires cabinet approval.
The GBA was declared during the G20 Leadership Summit formulated in New Delhi, on September 9, 2023. It had first been conceptualized by India. It would bring the biggest consumers and producers of biofuels together to help in development and deployment and to decrease crude oil dependence in pursuit of net-zero carbon from the globe by 2030.
