Global Bioenergy Partnership’s ‘Bioenergy Week’ in Rome

International biofuel stakeholders and policymakers gathered at the Global Bioenergy Partnership’s (GBEP) Bioenergy Week in Rome, Italy to discuss the efficiency and sustainability practices of biofuel production and explore growth opportunities in Europe and beyond. The conference was sponsored by the U.S. Grains Council.

Organized by the United Nations (UN) Food and Agriculture Organization, the 11th annual event featured presentations and meetings aimed at reducing global carbon emissions through bioenergy. USGC Director of Global Ethanol Export Development Mackenzie Boubin and USGC Manager of Ethanol Policy and Sustainability Linda Schmid attended to represent the Council and the U.S. ethanol industry.

“This is one of the most significant events on the biofuels industry calendar, and the Council is proud to have contributed to its success,” Schmid stated. “Tackling greenhouse gas emissions is a global challenge that requires a concerted global effort.”

In preparation for the event, Boubin and Schmid met with Ellen Luger, minister counsellor for agriculture at the U.S. Mission to the UN, and visited staff at the Italian Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security to promote the benefits of increased ethanol blending rates.

Thematically, the conference was organized over days and covered several opportunities and challenges facing the sector. Day one was on the role of the youth in the climate movement and their continued activism on Climate Change. Other days overlapped with science and public policy, got a closer look at bioenergy in the agricultural supply chain, and recognized biofuels as deployable and sustainable solutions for large-scale decarbonization.
