Kolhapur on alert as rivers swell, threatening floods

Kolhapur: Kolhapur district in Maharashtra faces a heightened threat of flood as water levels of the Panchganga River are fast reaching danger levels. An orange alert was declared on Thursday, asking people to keep themselves prepared for evacuation, reports the Times of India.

The water level of the Panchganga River reached a worrying 42 feet 7 inches at Rajaram Barrage in Kolhapur city on Wednesday evening, barely inches below the danger mark of 43 feet. Water levels are likely to rise as Kalamba Lake, located close to the city, starts overflowing.

In addition to that, the Radhanagari Dam, which is one of the tributaries of the Panchaganga, is on the verge of overflowing. If it happened to overflow, it would add more water discharge into the Bhogavati River, further worsening the flood situation here.

This district has had a history of such destructive floods—the majors in 2019 and 2021. Keeping this in mind, the district disaster management team is taking proactive measures.

“Residents in low-lying areas have been alerted and asked to be prepared for evacuation,” said Prasad Sankpal, head of the district disaster management team. “We request everyone to adhere to the guidelines and instructions issued by the district administration.”

Kolhapur residents are advised to remain vigilant and keep following all official advisories as the flood situation unfolds.
