Sugarcane farmers in Karnal reluctant to register on MFMB portal

Karnal: Sugarcane farmers of the district are reluctant  to get their crops registered on the “Meri Fasal Mera Byora” portal, an initiative by the state government that aims to provide manifold benefits to farmers for the sale of their produce in a very transparent manner, reports The Tribune.

As per media report, reluctance among farmers continues even after continuous efforts by the Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Department. According to official data, only 12,524 acres have been registered to date against nearly 40,000 acres of cultivation of sugarcane in the district. Many farmers, especially those leasing out fields, are finding the present registration process too difficult. They say that the system demands an OTP for verification which is sent to the field owner’s registered mobile number. This is very often getting delayed and complicates the process, they said.

“The OTP goes to the landowner’s number. If the owner is unavailable or busy, the registration gets delayed,” said a sugarcane farmer.

An official stated that the government mandated MFMB registration for sugarcane sales last year, but the poor response led to the directive being retracted. This year, authorities have made crop registration on the MFMB portal mandatory, emphasizing that only registered farmers will be eligible for sugarcane procurement.
