Pakistan’s SAB recommends another sugar export to Tajikistan

The federal government’s Sugar Advisory Board (SAB) has recommended exporting 40,000 tonnes of sugar to Tajikistan. This recommendation comes after the government had already approved a 150,000-ton export in June 2024., reports Pakistani media.

The Sugar Advisory Board recommended the latest export during a meeting with the Cabinet Committee on Monitoring Sugar Exports. The proposal will now go to the Economic Coordination Committee for final approval.

Now the proposal will be presented before the Economic Coordination Committee of the Cabinet by the Ministry of Industries and Production for consideration. The ECC would consider the latest developments in the sugar industry before the final decision. The SAB has also proposed an extension in the export period from the existing 45 days to 60 days.

The PSMA said that the price ex-mill remained the same, and this would translate to a stable retail price for sweeteners. PSMA also requested that retail prices by the government be kept at stable rates.

The government allowed the export of 150,000 metric tons of sugar in June 2024 on the condition that sufficient local stocks would be maintained to avert any shortage and ensure stable prices in the domestic market.
