Uttar Pradesh: Sugarcane cultivation increases in Maharajganj

Maharajganj: The strict measures by the government regarding sugarcane price payments have brought hope for a revival in sugarcane farming, reports Live Hindustan.

A few years ago, farmers in Maharajganj used to cultivate sugarcane on a large scale. The district even had four sugar mills. However, after two sugar mills shut down and sugarcane payments got stuck, many farmers gradually stopped cultivating sugarcane. This year, though, timely payments by the sugar mills have led farmers in Maharajganj to cultivate sugarcane on more 2,997 hectares.

The survey undertaken through the Sugarcane Department to have an idea of the potential production of sugarcane in the district for the coming crushing season of 2024-25 has indicated an increase in the area under sugarcane to the credit of the region of Siswan and Garoura. District Sugarcane Officer Omprakash Singh Yadav stated that the surveys were conducted to ascertain the area under sugarcane cultivation. The Sugarcane Department found 19,130 hectares of land under sugarcane cultivation in the survey. In the last crushing season, farmers had cultivated sugarcane on 16,133 hectares. This year, an additional 2,997 hectares have been cultivated, which is a positive sign in a challenging situation.
