Bihar: Sugar mills asked to pay farmers on time

Patna : Krishnanandan Paswan, Minister of Sugarcane Industries, asked sugar mills to ensure that farmers selling sugarcane to them get their dues on time. He was speaking at a kisan meeting held in Bameti Auditorium, aimed at boosting the production of sugarcane. More sugarcane is required to keep the mills running longer, he pointed out. About 200 farmers from five sugar mills—Manjhaulia, Lauriya, Sugauli, Sindhwalia, and Vishnu Sugar Gopalganj—attended the meeting, reports Live Hindustan.

Principal Secretary Narmdeshwar Lal said it is important to expand sugarcane farming and increase the yield per hectare. Cane Commissioner Anil Jha noted that sugarcane is a profitable crop, with mills paying farmers around Rs 2400 crore each year.

Jha also announced an online portal for departmental schemes this year and said that 12 more farmer meetings will be held across the state. Joint Director Sunil Kumar Pankaj talked about grants available under the Chief Minister’s Sugarcane Development Scheme. Joint Cane Commissioner J.P.N. Singh explained the plans for the next crushing season.

In a technical session, experts shared ways to increase sugarcane yield per hectare. Scientists Dr. Navneet Kumar, Dr. Anil Kumar, and Anupam Amitabh from the Sugarcane Research Institute in Pusa taught advanced farming techniques to the farmers.
