Cost-effective sugar mill option: Discussion is underway with potential suppliers, says Fiji’s Sugar Minister

Fiji: The government is considering purchasing a second-hand mill for Rakiraki as setting up a new mill would be expensive, said Fiji’s Minister for Sugar, Charan Jeath Singh, reports FBC News.

The Minister has indicated that the Ministry is not ready to move away from the Penang Sugar Mill at this time. Discussions are currently underway with potential suppliers regarding the second-hand factory.

“If we do bring in that particular mill it will cost us around about 125 million dollars to set it up, bring it in, set up and do all the civil works. But if you have to get a brand new mill it will cost us about 250 million.” Singh explained.

Further, Singh said that consultants from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) are currently mid the process of conducting a review of Fiji’s sugar industry. He adds that a report will be submitted to the Ministry next month, offering a clear insight into the industry.
