In July, Ukrainian white beet sugar exports fell to 10,300 metric tonnes following the European Union’s restrictions on the country’s sugar imports, according to the agriculture ministry’s report on Wednesday, reported Reuters.
The ministry did not provide figures for sugar exports in June, but the Ukrainian Agrarian Council indicated that Ukraine exported around 100,000 tons of sugar that month.
The EU’s sugar import restrictions, announced in April, came in response to widespread protests from regional farmers who argued that they faced unfair competition from producers outside the bloc, such as Ukraine, which do not adhere to the same environmental regulations and bureaucracy.
The agriculture ministry noted that in July, Ukrainian businesses sold 77,800 tonnes of sugar, with 67,700 tonnes sold domestically and 10,300 tonnes exported, primarily to Turkey and Libya.
As per report, for the calendar year 2023, Ukrainian producers exported approximately 493,000 tons of sugar to the EU.
