Bareilly: Sugarcane farmers in Bareilly claims that they are facing tough times because local sugar mills have not paid them pending cane dues. According to the farmers, the Nawabganj and Baheri mills have delayed payments for several months, causing financial problems for them, reports Patrika.com.
District Cane Officer Yashpal Singh has issued notices to these mills, warning that if they don’t pay soon, strict action will be taken.
As per media report, in the 2023-24 season, five sugar mills in Bareilly, located in Faridpur, Baheri, Meerganj, Nawabganj, and Semikhera, procured sugarcane worth Rs 1,208.16 crore from farmers. By August 20, around Rs 1,000 crore had been paid, but Rs 208.16 crore is still unpaid, which is worrying the farmers.
The Oswal Sugar Mill in Nawabganj owes Rs 56.56 crore, and the Kesar Sugar Mill in Baheri owes Rs 151.6 crore. The other three mills have paid the farmers in full. The delay in payments is making it hard for farmers to buy necessary things like fertilisers and pesticides for their crops. Without the money from the mills, farmers are struggling to invest in their fields, adding to their difficulties.
