The government has recently permitted the production of ethanol from cane juice and B-heavy molasses. This development has led the industry to believe that the government’s target of achieving 20 per cent ethanol blending by 2025-26 will be met. Praj Industries’ CEO and MD, Shishir Joshipura, also believes that the country is on track to achieve this goal.
In an interview with CNBC Awaaz, Shishir Joshipura praised the government’s recent decision to lift the ban on ethanol production. He described the move as highly significant and progressive, noting that it allows the utilization of abundant feedstocks available in various regions for ethanol production. This decision underscores the government’s commitment to advancing the bioenergy sector. Joshipura believes that this decision will greatly support India’s EBP 20 program and future developments in the bioenergy sector.
Regarding ethanol production and growth, Joshipura expressed confidence that the 20 per cent ethanol blending target by 2025-26 is now within reach. Looking ahead, he highlighted the potential of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) as a significant area of growth, where work has not yet commenced. The Alcohol-to-Jet pathway for SAF production is also crucial, given international agreements that mandate SAF blending in international flights starting January 2027. Additionally, diesel blending programs and the transition to E100 will lead to increased demand for flex-fuel vehicles. As the use of ethanol grows, so will its consumption volume.
