Tripura government announces free sugar to 9.83 lakh ration card holders

The Tripura government will provide sugar, flour and semolina (suji) free of cost to 9.83 lakh ration card holders in the state.

During a press conference on September 27, Sushanta Chowdhury, Tripura’s Minister for Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs, announced that this decision was made in the cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Manik Saha the previous day.

“We have decided to provide 1 kg of sugar, 2 kg of flour, and 500 grams of semolina for free to 9.83 lakh ration card holders. This initiative, agreed upon by all cabinet ministers including the chief minister, is in celebration of Durga Puja and will begin in October,” said Chowdhury.

He noted that the department will allocate Rs 6.84 crore for this program.

“Each year, we offer these items at subsidized prices through the Public Distribution System (PDS), but this time it’s a special measure due to the hardships faced by people after the floods. Around 3000 MT of sugar has already arrived in the state, with more on the way. Ration shops have begun distributing sugar,” he added.
