Monsoon rains in India 8 per cent above long-period average: IMD

New Delhi: Monsoon rains in India were 8 per cent higher than the long-term average till September 30, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The IMD also reported that the 2024 monsoon season, from June to September, saw the best rainfall in recent years.

This year’s monsoon marked the highest rainfall recorded in four years, the IMD added. Monsoon rains play a vital role in India’s economy, as many farmers rely on the seasonal rains for irrigation and crop growth.

Conditions are becoming favourable for the further withdrawal of southwest monsoon from some more parts of Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab and some parts of Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-GilgitBaltistan-Muzaffarabad & Himachal Pradesh during next 2-3 days.

As per IMD, fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall very likely over northeast region during the week; scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall very likely over Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim during the week and isolated to Scattered light to moderate rainfall over remaining region during the week. Isolated heavy to very Heavy rainfall very likely over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya on 03rd October. Isolated heavy rainfall very likely over Arunachal Pradesh during 30th September-02nd October & on 04th October; Assam & Meghalaya and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura during the week.
