2024 monsoon season ends with 7.6 per cent more rainfall than normal: IMD

The 2024 monsoon season has ended with 7.6 per cent more rainfall than normal, the India Meteorological Department said on Tuesday. Rajasthan, Gujarat, west Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh got excess rainfall, according to the IMD data.

Forecasts suggest that October’s rainfall could reach 115% of the Long Period Average (LPA), and the post-monsoon season from October to December is expected to see rainfall at 112% of LPA. This above-normal rainfall during the post-monsoon period may disrupt the harvesting of kharif crops such as paddy, pulses, and oilseeds, potentially impacting overall productivity.

The weather office indicates that during the October-December period, areas in central, eastern, and northeastern India are expected to experience normal to above-normal rainfall activity, while some regions in northwestern and northeastern India may see normal to below-normal rainfall.
