Farmers block highway in Shamli over unpaid sugarcane dues

Shamli : Protesting against the Shamli sugar mill over pending cane dues, farmers blocked the Panipat-Khatima National Highway on Tuesday, reported The Times of India.

Farmers began to protest after they were obstructed by police from marching to the District Magistrate’s office. In response, the farmers staged a sit-in outside the Collectorate, but officials did not open the gates to address their concerns, causing major disruptions to traffic on the highway.

According to the news report, the farmers had been protesting at the sugar mill for 12 days. When they received no response from authorities, they decided to march to the Collectorate on Monday. Police blocked their path so that they could not reach the District Magistrate’s office.

ADM Shamli Santosh Kumar said that efforts were underway to mediate a settlement between the farmers and mill officials, and all developments were being closely monitored.
