Chandigarh: The government has announced that sugarcane crushing in the state will start on November 25. This decision was made at the State Sugarcane Control Board meeting, led by Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Gurmeet Singh Khuddian.
Minister Khuddian shared that the area for sugarcane farming in Punjab has increased by 5 per cent this year. “This season, sugarcane has been grown on 1 lakh hectares, compared to about 95,000 hectares last year,” he said. Punjab has 15 sugar mills—nine cooperative and six private—expected to crush around 700 lakh quintals of sugarcane. The state is projected to produce 62 lakh quintals of sugar this season.
Khuddian directed officials to ensure that all preparations are in place before crushing operations begin. He stressed that farmers should have a hassle-free experience selling their produce and receiving timely payments.
