Badaun, Uttar Pradesh: Farmers in the district are yet to receive last year’s sugarcane payments by local sugar mills. This delayed payment is causing farmers to lose interest in growing sugarcane, a sentiment reflected in this year’s decrease in sugarcane cultivation by around 13 per cent compared to last year.
Last year, sugarcane was planted over 21,461 hectares in the district, but this area has now been reduced to 18,577 hectares, as per news report by Amar Ujala.
Last year, seven sugar mills in the district set up purchase centres. Yadu Sugar Mill purchased the most cane, buying 27.91 lakh quintals, followed by the Cooperative Sugar Mill in Shekhupur with 13.19 lakh quintals. Altogether, the seven mills procured a total of 60.31 lakh quintals of sugarcane.
