Sugar smuggler caught red-handed in Malaysia

Tumpat: A suspected smuggler was apprehended while attempting to smuggle 13,000 kilograms of sugar worth over RM40,000 to Thailand. The arrest took place at Wakaf Bharu, where the General Operations Force (GOF) intercepted the suspect’s lorry, which was being used to transport the sugar, reported the New Straits Times.

GOF Southeast Brigade Commander Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Abd Hamid reported that a GOF team spotted the lorry passing through Kampung Kulim in Wakaf Bharu. The team stopped the vehicle around 5 p.m. and discovered the subsidised sugar, valued at more than RM40,000. The 26-year-old driver was taken into custody, and an initial investigation revealed plans to smuggle the sugar across the border via an illegal jetty.

In a separate incident later that day, two men were detained at Wakaf Bharu for carrying 300 cartons of 1-kilogram cooking oil packets, valued at around RM12,700. The men were travelling in a lorry when they were stopped by GOF personnel at approximately 6 p.m. Commander Nik Ros Azhan stated that the cooking oil was likely intended for the Thai market, with suspicions that the men were hired to transport the goods to suppliers in Thailand.
