Punjab government considering increase in sugarcane price

The Punjab government is considering an increase in the sugarcane price, Finance Minister Harpal Cheema announced on Wednesday. The decision comes in response to long-standing demands from farmers. Cheema made the announcement while addressing the state-level event of National Cooperative Week.

Following an increase of â‚ą11 per quintal in the sugarcane price last year, bringing the total to â‚ą391 per quintal, Cheema stated that the state government is now evaluating further hikes. This move aims to strengthen the financial position of farmers in Punjab.

The decision is expected to provide significant relief to the state’s sugarcane farmers and improve their economic conditions. However, despite last year’s increase, many farmers expressed dissatisfaction, calling for a larger hike. At the time, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had justified the â‚ą11 per quintal increase, calling it an auspicious gesture, and noted that the government wanted to offer this as a gift to farmers.
