The Tamil Nadu Organic Farmers Association and the Alliance for Sustainable and Holistic Agriculture and SAF have called on Chief Minister MK Stalin to take immediate action to halt the sale of genetically modified (GM) maize in the state, reported The New Indian Express.
In their representation, the organizations highlighted that Tamil Nadu has long been a leader in opposing GM crops, with the state firmly stating its position against the introduction of GM crops and related products.
The representation referred to the research study of the National Institute of Food Technology, Entrepreneurship and Management, Thanjavur, which found that genetically modified maize and products made of this maize are being sold at Korathagudi near Kumbakonam. This research confirmed the presence of GM maize in Tamil Nadu. The representation also criticized the central government for its lack of response to this issue.
