Patna: The Riga Sugar Mill in Sitamarhi district, which had been closed for four years, will resume operations on December 20, stated an official from the sugarcane industries department. The mill, previously owned by the Dhanuka Group, stopped its operations in 2020.
“The sugar mill was closed since the crushing season of 2020-21. The matter was under consideration at the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT), Kolkata bench. The NCLT declared Messrs Nirani Sugars Ltd as the successful investor, and they deposited the entire tender amount. The sugar mill is expected to resume operations from December 20, 2024,” the official said.
Currently, around 400 workers are involved in repair and maintenance work at the mill so that it is ready to start on schedule.
The official added, “In the 2024-25 crushing season, the mill is likely to crush around 15 to 20 lakh quintals of sugarcane. This would benefit around 5,000 to 7,000 farmers. Thereafter, from the 2025-26 crushing season, the mill would benefit around 30,000 to 35,000 sugarcane farmers, thereby bringing economic prosperity to the Sitamarhi, Sheohar, and Muzaffarpur districts.”
