Uttar Pradesh’s sugar mills are now making prompt payments to farmers, with 100 of the state’s 120 sugar mills ensuring that payments are made within a week.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, speaking at the ‘Krishika-From Farming to Prosperity’ event, emphasized the welfare of sugarcane farmers in the state. He said the sugarcane sector now boasts 120 operational sugar mills, 100 of which make payments to farmers within a week.
“Uttar Pradesh ranks first in sugarcane, sugar, and ethanol production, while also contributing 25% of India’s potato production and 30% of its maize output. The state’s farmers have set records in the cultivation of paddy, wheat, pulses, and oilseeds. These achievements, driven by the hard work of farmers and the ‘double-engine’ government’s initiatives, have restored UP’s pride as the food basket of the nation,” the CM said.
He emphasized the role of technology in transforming the agriculture sector, stating that Uttar Pradesh — which accounts for only 11% of the nation’s land but contributes around 20% of its total food production — could triple its output if technology is embraced.
He criticized the opposition for politicizing farmers’ issues while crediting Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the real progress made. “Both the central and state governments are committed to empowering farmers to achieve self-reliance, ensuring they never have to depend on others,” he said, highlighting initiatives like soil health cards and key schemes such as PM Fasal Bima Yojana and PM Krishi Sinchayee Yojana that have benefited the farming community.
