Bihar CM Nitish Kumar to inaugurate Riga sugar mill on December 26: Minister

The Riga sugar mill in Bihar’s Sitamarhi district, which has been closed for four years, is set to reopen. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar will inaugurate the mill on December 26, informed Sugarcane Industry Minister Krishnanandan Paswan.

The reopening of the mill is expected to benefit farmers, workers, and local businesses.

Krishnanandan Paswan also praised the move by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to implement an additional Rs 10 per quintal hike in the price of sugarcane, bringing the total increase for the 2024-25 sugar season to Rs 20 per quintal compared to the previous season. He also stated that the Chief Minister will inaugurate the Riga Sugar Mill on December 26.

The reopening of the mill is expected to significantly boost the region’s economy. Over the past four years, the closure of the mill had severely impacted sugarcane farmers, workers, shopkeepers, traders, transporters, and their families.

With the mill now back in operation, many are hopeful for better days ahead, as it is expected to restore livelihoods and bring stability to the region’s economy.

The Riga Sugar Mill, one of India’s most historic sugar mills, has found a new owner after many years of closure. Karnataka-based Nirani Sugars Limited has recently acquired the Riga Sugar Company Limited.

The acquired facilities include a sugar Plant with a crushing capacity of 5,000 TCD (Tons of Cane per Day), distillery capacity of 45 KLPD (Kilo Liters per Day) and a Co-Generation Power Plant of 11 MW.
