Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, emphasized the importance of adopting alternative fuels to combat air pollution. He mentioned that the government is actively working on projects aimed at reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
“We are concentrating on developing alternative fuels such as ethanol, methanol, bio-diesel, bio-CNG, and hydrogen-based solutions to tackle the challenges posed by fossil fuel reliance,” Gadkari said during the inauguration of the BAJA SAEINDIA 2025 event.
Additionally, Gadkari stressed the need to diversify agriculture to support the production of fuel and energy for various sectors, including construction. “We are producing ethanol from resources like corn, broken rice, bamboo, rice straw, sugarcane juice, B Heavy molasses & C Heavy molasses,” he said, adding that farmers will transition from being mere food providers to contributors of energy and fuel for the nation.
The minister also mentioned that prominent companies are developing flex engines that run on bio-ethanol. He said, “Tata, Mahindra, Toyota, Hyundai, and Suzuki are already in the process of launching their flex engine four-wheelers on 100% bioethanol.”
Launching of flex engine four-wheelers on 100% bioethanol will be a significant step in India’s biofuel journey, aligning with the nation’s push towards sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives to fossil fuels. The increased adoption of ethanol-powered vehicles is expected to drive higher ethanol consumption, reduce carbon emissions, and boost the agricultural economy.
India aims to achieve a 20 percent ethanol blending target in petrol by 2025, and the government is confident it will meet this target on time. The government has also begun discussions to create a roadmap for increasing ethanol adoption after 2025, following the successful achievement of the national target of 20% ethanol blending in petrol.
