Tamil Nadu: Food safety officials seize sugar from jaggery manufacturing units in Namakkal

On Thursday, food safety officials seized 10 tonnes of sugar from 45 jaggery manufacturing units near Jedarpalayam.

There are over 60 jaggery-making units operating in areas like Pilikkalpalayam and Jedarpalayam, near Paramathi Vellore in the district. With the Pongal festival approaching, the production of ‘achu vellam’ and ‘urundai vellam’ is in full swing.

Acting on a tip-off about some units using sugar in jaggery production, a team led by district food safety officer Dr. Arun conducted an inspection. During the search, the officials seized 10,900 kg of sugar from the units and collected jaggery samples for lab testing.

“If the lab results confirm adulteration, we will take legal action under the Food Safety Act and impose fines on the violating units,” the officer stated, reported Times of India.

Food safety officials have warned jaggery producers against adding sugar, stressing that strict actions and substantial penalties will follow any violations.
