India to achieve 20% ethanol blending target in 2 months: Nitin Gadkari

India is set to achieve its target of 20% ethanol blending within the next two months, according to Union Minister Nitin Gadkari. Speaking at an event on Wednesday, Gadkari said, “We will reach the 20% ethanol blending target in the next two months. The use of E20 (petrol with 20% ethanol) will help reduce pollution.”

Gadkari also highlighted that automakers like Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, Maruti Suzuki, and Hyundai Motors are in work in producing vehicles that run on 100% bio-ethanol.

He noted that pollution is a significant issue in India, with 42 Indian cities ranking among the 50 most-polluted cities globally. “We import fossil fuels worth Rs 22 lakh crore, which also contributes to pollution,” he added.

India aims to achieve a 20 percent ethanol blending target in petrol by 2025, and the government is confident it will meet this target on time. The government has also begun discussions to create a roadmap for increasing ethanol adoption after 2025, following the successful achievement of the national target of 20% ethanol blending in petrol.

According to the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas (MoPNG), Under Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP) Programme, supplies of ethanol has increased from 38 crore litres in Ethanol Supply Year (ESY) 2013-14 to 707.40 crore litres in ESY 2023-24, thereby achieving an average blending of 14.60% ethanol in Petrol. For the ongoing ESY (2024-2025), ethanol blending have further improved to 16.23% as on 29.12.2024. The Public Sector OMCs have started dispensing E20 petrol (20% ethanol in petrol) at more than 17,400 retail outlets across the country.
