Need to encourage all kinds of technologies, including compressed biogas, to cut carbon emissions, oil import: Maruti Suzuki

Maruti Suzuki’s MD and CEO, Hisashi Takeuchi, emphasized the importance of encouraging various technologies, including compressed biogas (CBG), to reduce carbon emissions and decrease the country’s reliance on oil imports. He made these remarks on Tuesday during the SIAM’s 3rd International Symposium for Thriving Eco-Energy in Mobility at Bharat Mandapam.

Takeuchi highlighted the need for government backing in ensuring accurate carbon accounting for biofuels. “For decarbonisation, it’s crucial to embrace all technologies that contribute to national goals of reducing carbon emissions and oil imports,” Takeuchi stated, speaking in the presence of Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri.

He noted India’s vast agricultural and livestock resources present a significant opportunity for biofuels like ethanol and CBG. These resources could help lower emissions, boost energy security, and generate rural employment.

Takeuchi shared a compelling example, stating, “To give a sense of the strength of this resource, I would like to tell you that as per a study, cow dung from 10 cows in one day has the potential to run a car on CBG for one day. And we have 300 million cows in India.”

Maruti Suzuki currently operates 115 CBG production plants, with many more under development. Takeuchi emphasized the company’s commitment to expanding CBG capacity, highlighting its compatibility with CNG infrastructure, which requires no additional infrastructure investment.
