Kenya: New sugar factory planned for Homabay County

Nairobi: Muwariziki Sugar Millers Limited has announced plans to set up a Sh1.5 billion ($11.52 million) sugar factory in Rangwe Sub-County, Homabay County.

The project involves the installation of a 1250 TCD sugar mill (with the potential to expand to 1500 TCD), a 20 KLPD ethanol distillery, and a 3 MW captive power cogeneration plant.

A report submitted to the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) outlines the factory’s focus on producing brown sugar, ethanol, bagasse (a fibrous by-product of sugarcane), and molasses. Other by-products like filter mud and boiler ash will also be generated.

The report notes that bagasse will be used in the power plant and ethanol unit, and any leftovers could be used to make paper or boards, providing a chance for further industrial activities in the area.

The project supports government efforts to revive Kenya’s struggling sugar industry, which has faced challenges like high production costs. Policies such as the Sugar Bill of 2019 and the reintroduction of the Sugar Development Levy aim to strengthen the sector.

“The revival of the Sugar Development Levy will help develop sugarcane and promote research, both of which are vital for the industry’s growth,” the report says.

Kenya’s sugar production has not been enough to meet demand, and the need for more factories in productive farming areas is growing.

The factory will rely on sugarcane grown by local farmers within 15 kilometres of the site. It is expected to boost the local economy and help reduce the country’s sugar shortage.
