Central Railway sees 24% increase in sugar rake loadings in January 2025

Central Railway has made impressive progress in its freight operations, achieving a remarkable 67.11 million tonnes (MT) of freight loading for the financial year 2024-25, up to 31st January 2025. This accomplishment is further highlighted by a record freight revenue of Rs. 7,217.48 crore, reflecting substantial growth in both volume and earnings.

Of the five divisions within Central Railway, Nagpur Division took the lead with 36.85 MT of freight loaded, accounting for nearly 55% of the total. The Mumbai Division followed closely with 19.04 MT, contributing around 28%. In January 2025 alone, Central Railway loaded 7.83 MT of freight, with Nagpur Division handling 4.48 MT (57%) and Mumbai Division 2.14 MT (27%).

Central Railway has improved performance in containers and loading of sugar & petroleum products which has enabled it to achieve the incremental loading over the corresponding month last year. Central Railway has registered loading of 62 rakes of sugar in January 2025 as against 50 rakes in January 2024 which is an increase of 24%. Notably, Pune Division has put up a remarkable performance in loading of sugar with 37 rakes loaded in January 2025 as against 18 rakes in January 2024 which is an increase of 105%.

Container traffic also experienced robust growth, with 847 rakes loaded in January 2025, a 15.7% increase from the previous year. Similarly, petroleum product loadings grew by 10.1%, while De-oiled cake loadings saw a 10.5% rise.

Central Railway’s performance in train interchange efficiency reached new heights, achieving a record daily average of 56.3 trains at Vasai Road, compared to 49.3 trains in January 2024.

On the revenue front, the total freight earnings for the year stood at Rs. 7,217.48 crore, with Nagpur Division contributing Rs. 3,849.67 crore (53%) and Mumbai Division Rs. 2,076.55 crore (29%). In January 2025 alone, the earnings amounted to Rs. 800.07 crore, with Nagpur Division contributing Rs. 445.07 crore (56%).

This outstanding performance is a result of Central Railway’s unwavering focus on business development and operational improvements, further cementing its leadership in freight transport and revenue generation.
