Pakistan: Authorities foil sugar hoarding attempt ahead of Ramadan

Karachi: In a major crackdown, authorities successfully prevented an attempt to hoard sugar worth millions of rupees just ahead of Ramadan 2025. During a raid on a warehouse in Karachi’s Korangi area, approximately 20,000 sacks of sugar were seized.

The operation was led by the Assistant Commissioner of Landhi, along with other officials. The recovered sugar sacks were traced back to nine sugar mills in Sindh and were found to bear fake stickers from the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR). The raid was part of a targeted operation launched under the directives of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Officials from the FBR and the Bureau of Supply and Price Control were also present during the raid, where they thoroughly inspected the warehouse’s records. To stabilise market prices, the authorities have decided to sell the seized sugar at government-approved rates.

This development comes amid growing concerns over rising prices of essential commodities ahead of Ramadan.
