Uttar Pradesh: Ethanol unit to be set up at Pipraich sugar mill

Gorakhpur: The Pipraich sugar mill, known for producing sulphur-free sugar, is set to expand its operations with the launch of ethanol production. The Uttar Pradesh government has allocated ₹90 crore in the 2025-26 Budget to set up a distillery at the mill, which will have a production capacity of 60 kilolitres per day. Officials say this initiative will help ensure quicker payments to sugarcane farmers.

The Pipraich sugar mill has a long history, established as a private unit in 1932. It was taken over in 1974 but was shut down in 1999. Officials recalled that when Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath was an MP, he repeatedly pushed for the revival of closed sugar mills, but previous governments did not take significant steps.

“When Yogi Adityanath became Chief Minister in 2017, he kept his word and reopened the mill at the same site, providing much-needed relief to local farmers,” an official said. The mill resumed operations on November 17, 2019, in record time, marking a significant achievement for the region, officials added.
