Malaysian prime minister campaigns for reduced sugar consumption

Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has requested the public to choose drinks with less or no sugar, as 12,000 restaurants under the Malaysian Muslim Restaurant Owners Association (Presma) are offering a 30 sen discount per drink.

Anwar explained that this initiative helps consumers save money while promoting healthier living.

“I commend the restaurant association for reducing prices when less sugar is used. Currently, whether a drink has sugar or not, the price of tea or coffee remains the same. This makes a difference,” he said.

“We’re campaigning for reduced sugar consumption,” he added after launching the Singgah Madani programme and having lunch at Restoran Nasi Kandar Liga Maju. Also present were Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali, and Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Dr Zaliha Mustafa.

He mentioned that the 30 sen discount would apply to all restaurant branches displaying the Malaysia Madani logo.

“This programme has been in place for some time. Typically, if a glass of tea without milk costs RM1.50, we offer RM1.20 for the less-sugar version, reducing the price by 30 sen. This is one of our efforts towards a healthier lifestyle,” he said.
