Tamil Nadu government urged to take steps to reopen National Cooperative Sugar Mill at Alanganallur

Madurai: During a recent consultation meeting focused on the upcoming 2025-26 agricultural budget for Tamil Nadu, M.P. Raman, president of the Vaigai-Tirumangalam Main Canal Water Users-Farmers Association, made a strong appeal to the state government. He urged officials to take steps to reopen the National Cooperative Sugar Mill located in Alanganallur, which has been closed for several years, reported The Hindu.

Raman emphasized the potential benefits of reopening the mill, stating, “If it is opened, farmers will stand to benefit and many people will get jobs too.” He made this statement during the Southern region-consultation meeting held in Tirunelveli on Thursday.

The meeting, attended by Assembly Speaker M. Appavu, Minister for Municipal Administration K.N. Nehru, and representatives from 12 southern districts, provided a platform for farmers to voice their long-pending demands. Participants requested that authorities carefully consider their concerns and incorporate them into the upcoming budget discussions.
