Mysuru: farmers protest outside CADA office demanding release of water

Mysuru: Farmers from the Karnataka State Farmers Association and the State Sugarcane Farmers Association staged a protest outside the Command Area Development Authority (CADA) office on Tuesday, demanding the immediate release of water from the KRS and Kabini reservoirs for irrigation, reports The Times of India.

Led by Hattalli Devaraju, general secretary of the State Sugarcane Growers Association, the protesters voiced concerns over the urgent need for water to sustain crops and meet local drinking water requirements. They warned that sugarcane crops were at risk of drying up due to the water shortage.

The farmers urged the government to release water into the canals connected to the Kabini reservoir to help replenish tanks and ponds critical for irrigation. They also highlighted the worsening impact of the drought on both people and livestock, emphasizing the falling groundwater levels, which were affecting agricultural pumps and leaving crops parched under the intense summer heat.

Tensions rose when protesters attempted to enter the CADA office but were stopped by police. A brief verbal exchange took place, but the farmers continued their demonstration outside the office, holding firm on their demand for an immediate water release.
