Chhattisgarh : Farmers struggle with stem borer infestation in sugarcane, the Agriculture Department issues advisory

Rajnandgaon: Sugarcane farmers in the district are facing difficulties due to an infestation of stem borer insects. The agriculture department has advised farmers to take precautions and has provided some solutions for managing the pests.

According to a report published in News18 Hindi, Dr. Birendra Anant, Assistant Director of the Agriculture Department, stated that the stem borer insect, also known as the stem borer, causes significant damage to crops. This pest affects the crop in four stages, with the larval stage being the most damaging. It eats the stem of the crop from below ground level. Various types of pesticides can be used to control it.

Regarding measures to protect against stem borer infestation, he suggested that infected plants in sugarcane stubble and newly planted crops should be cut off at ground level and destroyed. Farmers should then apply carbofuran 3% CG at a rate of 13 kg per acre and irrigate the field.

Additionally, he recommended spraying Katyayani Chakravarti (thiamethoxam 12.6% + lambda cyhalothrin 9.5% ZC) at a rate of 80-100 ml per acre. Farmers could also spray Katyayani Ima 5 (emamectin benzoate 5% SG) at a rate of 100 grams per acre, or Katyayani Attack CS (lambda-cyhalothrin 4.9% CS) at a rate of 100-120 ml per acre.

These measures can protect the sugarcane crop from stem borer infestation and prevent a decrease in yield.
