In a significant ruling, the Bombay High Court has paved the way for sugarcane farmers in Maharashtra to receive a one-time Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) payment.
The Bombay High Court Monday quashed and set aside the Maharashtra Government Resolution (GR) issued on February 21, 2022, that provided payment of FRP to sugarcane farmers in two installments, and termed it to be “illegal and invalid.”
Former Member of Parliament Raju Shetti, representing the farmers, had filed the petition, which was supported by legal counsel Advocate Yogesh Pandey in the High Court. This legal battle, which lasted for over three years, has now resulted in a favorable decision for the farmers, offering hope for the timely disbursement of the outstanding FRP payments.
Commenting on the court’s decision, Shetti stated, “For the past three years, we have been fighting this legal battle. The state government, despite lacking the authority, illegally altered the lump-sum FRP system in violation of central laws. Taking advantage of this, sugar mills in the state had been using a 10.25% FRP base and paying farmers in three instalments.”
